Apps are essential in the modern-day workplace, and in most industries, you’ll find the workforce using several apps daily to help streamline workflow, connect with clients and teammates, etc. What are the apps being most utilized by marketing professionals in particular? At NisonCo Marketing we asked leaders from three of our main teams — Public Relations, Content Writing, and Business Development — which job-specific apps are most important in their day-to-day and why.

The Public Relations Team: Slack, Salesforce and Google Calendar

Brian Nam-Sonenstien is NisonCo’s Pitching Director, in which capacity he oversees client support and the training of PR account coordinators and managers. His most-used apps are the office messaging software Slack, Google Calendar, and Salesforce, which is primarily used for customer relationship management services, but also has an associated suite of business development applications.

Brian explains why these are the most important apps needed to do his job daily: “Slack is where the team communicates and is the closest thing we have to an office. Salesforce we use a bit differently than I think most people. Although it is typically used in sales, in PR it helps us have a record of our work and communications, as well as a detailed database of our contacts.”

He went on to say that although it’s not the most interesting app, Google Calendar is essential to his everyday operations.

“Since we have so many calls all the time as a virtual office, Google Calendar is honestly a huge part of the day,” Brian said. “It allows me to cross-reference my calendar with my colleagues to find free time in common. It seems rather mundane, but it saves a lot of time wasted throwing times back and forth.”

The Content Writing Team: ClickUp, Feedly and Slack

Marissa Smith is NisonCo’s Managing Editor, in which capacity she heads the content writing team. In answer to our query, she responded that Slack, ClickUp and Feedly are her most-used and most important apps to do the job.

“We use Slack for team communication, collaboration, and hand-offs,” Marissa said. “It’s the hub of our workflow. ClickUp is essential to managing writing projects and is extremely customizable. I appreciate that tasks in ClickUp can also be visually organized depending on the user’s preference — such as into list, board or calendar view — without impacting the setup of other users.”

Communication and organization are indeed paramount to the success of the deadline-driven writing team. Marissa also emphasized the importance of staying up to date with the latest news for research purposes with regard to client relations, which is why Feedly is integral to her workflow. Feedly is a news aggregator application that compiles news feeds from a variety of online sources for the user to customize and share with others.

“Feedly is used to track the latest news stories about client interests and NisonCo’s,” Marissa said. “By staying ahead of the curve we can position our clients as thought leaders on emerging trends and issues.”

The Business Development Team: Zapier, ClickUp and Slack

Victoria Gates is NisonCo’s Director of Operations and works on business development (along with a bit of everything else). Running operations and business development means prioritizing efficient communication and organization. Her top three apps are Zapier, ClickUp and Slack.

ClickUp, similar to Trello and Monday, is a cloud-based collaboration and project management tool suitable for businesses of all sizes and industries. Features include communication and collaboration tools, task assignments and statuses, alerts, and a task toolbar. Two out of three NisonCo teams named ClickUp as an essential application for doing their job. This suggests that task management apps are also crucial for marketing teams to stay organized and prioritize tasks in an efficient manner.

“Slack is how our team communicates,” Victoria said. “We have integrations and apps set up empowering us to easily keep our communications organized and automated. Zapier is how we can automate tasks so our team can focus on thinking rather than always doing. ClickUp is our preferred project management tool. Our team keeps track of all the larger projects and smaller one-off pieces, which can be so easy to forget.”
